Real Christians Do Not Burn Qurans – An Open Letter to Terry Jones

I’m sorry, but I can’t address you as “Pastor” Jones. You see, a pastor is the overseer of a flock or congregation, their spiritual leader, the one whose hands in which they rest and who is held to the highest level of responsibility and accountability, and in my eyes one who reflects the life and teachings of Jesus Christ.

I’m trying to understand, I truly am, why you would make a public display of burning the Quran. Our Lord stated, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Does this mean you have no problem standing idly by and watching a group burn numerous copies of the Holy Bible? The American flag? Would you condone it, or actually instigate it, even as you are instigating the burning of the Quran? Quite often, what feels right is not always the right thing.

It is beyond my comprehension why anyone who claims to walk in the love of the Christ would intentionally carry and cause such bitter hatred for others. It truly bothers me that some might think the same Christianity you purport to practice is the same as that of the Christ I serve and who is Lord of my life. My Jesus said clearly, “They will know that you are my disciples in that you have love for one another,” and Mr. Jones, I’m not feelin’ a whole lot of love from you right now. He also said, “They shall know you by the fruit you bear.” Your actions send the message of a lack of love and concern for your brothers and sisters in Christ, and therefore do not bear witness to the words of our Lord. In my humble opinion, your fruit is rotten and stinketh!

You have sent the message it is time for us to teach the Muslims a lesson. The God of my Bible says, “Vengeance is mine.” You seem to be expressing that your power and control is more important than that of Jehovah God.

You and your congregation have “protested” in the past that Islam is of Satan. My red letter edition of the Holy Bible quotes Jesus as admonishing His followers: “Judge not that ye be not judged. For in the manner you judge, you shall also be judged.” Jesus further goes on to say, “Love your enemies. Do good to them who despitefully use you…” and “If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that?” Your message is one of judgment and hatred, Mr. Jones, and it saddens me to see the damage you are doing to Christianity as a whole.

Must we go into the whole, “You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye. . .” or “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the sons of God.” Are you, or are you not God’s son? According to His words, your reflection is not that of Christ.

Paul writes that in Him “There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” What of Muslims who may have turned to Christianity? Are you damning them along with the others you choose to judge? The pastor of a church I visited just this past Sunday put it so well as she (yes, imagine that, a woman pastor!) so lovingly stated: “Al Qaida is to the Muslim faith what the KKK is to Christianity…” Selah (Take pause and reflect), Mr. Jones.

One must wonder if all this media hype is an attempt on your part to garner attention. I recall another “pastor” who sold his flock a bill of goods in the name of Jesus. Ironically, his last name was also Jones.

Not only as a Christian, but as a licensed and ordained Christian minister, I am grieved to the innermost depths of my soul that millions from many denominations and religions will hear your words, see your actions and become confused in thinking you are representative of Jesus the Christ, the Savior of the entire world. . . not just you, not just your congregation, not just one or two denominations.

It seems important to use our Savior’s words to address your actions, Mr. Jones. I can’t help but think that many centuries ago, as He hung on the Cross at Calvary and spoke into all time – past, present and future – that for such a time as this He said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Or perhaps you do know, and I’m most certain that would sadden Him even more, setting so much of what He did to be in vain. I hope your hands are really big, Mr. Jones. There just may be a lot of blood on them for which you will be held responsible before this is all said and done.

In closing, I reiterate one more time – Dear fellow humans, do NOT confuse my Christ with the message Terry Jones preaches. That is NOT Christianity, and true Christians will NOT burn Qurans, rather, we will wrap our loving arms around you and share the love of Jesus Christ, the same Christ who said, “Depart from me you workers of iniquity. I never knew you…”
