VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE—WHY WAS BEA DICKEY MURDERED?

Bea Dickey - another senseless death

This question came up on my blog recently. Unfortunately, there are times and murders when we just can’t seem to come up with an acceptable answer or explanation. Bea Dickey’s murder, at the time of this writing, did not fit the norm. Most victims who die at the hands of domestic violence are either shot or stabbed to death. Only 7% are beaten, such as Bea. In most cases the following fits somewhere into the equation:

  • There is extensive jealousy displayed on the part of the abuser
  • The perpetrator has a prior criminal record
  • There is a record, or at least existence, of prior domestic violence or spouse abuse
  • The perpetrator abuses drugs or alcohol
  • The family pet has been threatened or harmed

According to the Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence, in approximately 37% of the domestic violence reports, at least one friend, family member or coworker was aware of the abuse taking place. So far, nobody has come forward to say they knew Bea had been abused, even if it was verbally or emotionally. Her coworkers repeatedly make comments such as, “This takes us by such surprise,” or “We had no idea.”

One in four women in the United States either already has been or will become a victim of domestic violence. Bea was that one in four. As frustrating as it is, for now we have no idea what brought on this heinous crime. Perhaps as the investigation unfolds, we will get clearer explanations. Until then, we simply must learn all we can about how to recognize the signs of spouse abuse and domestic violence, and what to do once we have identified them. Some information has been previously posted here on my blog, and other information is forthcoming.
