This is a very busy time of year for any and all of those working against domestic violence, or to bring more awareness to the public regarding this wicked thing. How did it start? Visit the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) website to learn the story behind it.

WHY do we continue to acknowledge a National Domestic Violence Awareness Month? Again, visit the NCADV site and take a look at some of the statistics there. Domestic violence affects every American in some way, whether it is as the victim, families of victims, or the financial impact domestic violence has on our country. We lose BILLIONS of dollars to domestic violence each year. Yes, on an ANNUAL basis.

We also continue to acknowledge National Domestic Violence Awareness Month to honor those whose lives were snuffed out as a result of DV murders and/or murder-suicides, as well as all victims of domestic violence, past and present. We do it to honor the true heroes of domestic violence. We do it to honor Nicole Brown Simpson, dead at the age of 35; Sheryl Laird, victim of a murder-suicide; Audrey Mabrey, beaten with a hammer and set afire, now awaiting the trial of her abuser, and we do it to pay tribute to those law enforcement officers who were seriously injured or lost their lives when answering a domestic call.

What will YOU do to acknowledge National Domestic Violence Awareness Month? Will you commit to wear purple? ABC Action News of Tampa will be televising their Emmy award winning annual special, TAKING ACTION AGAINST DOMESTIC VIOLENCE on Friday, October 14. It will air for one uninterrupted hour. No commercials, just stories, help and hope. My story will be one of those featured. I hope you will tune in or view it via internet link. I hope my story will bring proper honor to all those who have paid the ultimate price as victims of domestic violence.

  2. Thank you for bringing the purple to the forefront. Ironically, one of our local news reporters who has won Emmy awards for her writing and work against domestic violence disclosed today she will be out for a few weeks, having a bilateral mastectomy. She has breast cancer. PINK & PURPLE!!! We girls owe it to ourselves to become educated on BOTH colors.
